After-School FAQ

Q: What will my child be doing in a Mad Science class?
A: The content of the class varies depending on what system is running at your child's school. All our classes have a strong emphasis on hands-on activities, so you can be sure that whatever the topic is, your child will be right in the middle of it! Some examples of activities from our programs include:

•Using mirrors to guide a laser through a maze
•Making their own thermometers from test tubes and straws
•Testing different foods for the presence of protein or starch, using an indicator chemical
•Building a domino structure that can withstand the movements of techtonic plates during an earthquake

Every class comes with two things for your child to keep: a take-home project and an info card. Some take-home projects are assembled and tested as part of class, and some are sent home with simple assembly instructions. Take-home projects examples include a cardboard periscope, a model rocket, or a pair of diffraction glasses. The info card will outline the main points covered in that day's lesson, and give instructions for an optional at-home experiment to revisit the concepts.

Q: What ages can enroll in Mad Science programs?
A: Mad Science has programs specifically meant for preschoolers (3-4 years old) and elementary students (5-10 years old.) Plenty of children in the 11-13 age range still enjoy our programs, particularly the NASA system, so if you have a child in this age range and believe they would have fun in our class, feel free to sign them up or contact us for some more info about the program content.

Q: How do I register my child for a Mad Science program?
A: Visit our program catalog and search by location to see if we are running a program at your child's school. If we're not, contact us! We would love to set up a program.

Q: Does my child need to bring anything to Mad Science?
A:  We provide all materials. The only thing your child needs to have for Mad Science is curiosity!

Q: Does Mad Science assign homework?
A: No. Your child will definitely want to play with their take-home projects after class, and we often send home resources for optional experiments at home if you would like to try them out with your child, but Mad Science doesn't assign any work outside class.

Q: How do I pay for Mad Science registration?
A: Some Mad Science programs can be paid for directly through our website. For these programs, our default payment schedule won't charge you anything before the program starts. The full amount will be charged 1-3 business days after your child's first day of Mad Science class.

Other Mad Science programs are paid for through your child's school district. For these programs, our catalog will provide a web address and/or a phone number to register.
