After-School Program Information

Mad Science programs are great for extracurricular learning in any setting! We teach in schools, daycares, community centers, and private in-home classes.

Our self-contained classes focus on one topic, from magnetism, to space technology to chemical reactions in the kitchen. Classes also work together to reinforce larger science concepts, such as the nature of molecules and forces affecting motion.

We can be funded through parent payment, donations/sponsorships, 21st Century Community Learning Center grants, or a combination.

Mad Science after-school classes:

  • Combine discussion, demonstration, and lots of hands-on experimentation
  • Use visual aids, active games, art projects, and team activities to appeal to all learning styles
  • Come with a fun take-home experiment to reinforce the lesson's concepts
  • Provide all staff, curriculum, and materials
  • Are one hour long and suitable for kids ages 3-10

Children learn about persistence of vision with their own Mad Science motor-powered Technicolor Blender.

Mad Science instructors:

  • Have AZ Department of Public Safety fingerprint clearance cards
  • Are enthusiastic, knowledgable, versatile, and engaging; instructors wear lab coats and pick a Mad Science pseudonym to make them fun and approachable
  • Receive ongoing training in classroom management, curriculum differentiation, and teaching skills
  • Are everything from college students to grandparents, teachers to engineers to theater actors to exobiologists-- but they all love science and love working with kids!

Mad Science curriculum:

  • Is correlated to Arizona Science Standards
  • Uses exclusive and professionally-developed lesson plans
  • Is organized into four blocks of lessons, called systems. Each system has 8 lessons, detailed below.

System 2 gets kids familiar with basic scientific principles, as well as how they experience the world around them. Exploring the nature of matter, light, and heat will give them a foundation to move on to more complex topics; paying attention to how they perceive things they see, smell, and taste will help them develop important observational skills.

System 2 Includes These Individual Lessons:

•Magnetic Magic    •Harnessing Heat
•Lights, Color, Action!    •Mission Nutrition
•Sonic Sounds    •Optical Illusions
•Tantalizing Taste    •Watts Up

System 3 introduces concepts in physical chemistry and engineering, then connects them to their applications in real life. Kids learn about atomic and molecular interactions, forces like gravity and inertia, and how these are used in everything from magic shows to airplane flight to building construction.

System 3 Includes These Individual Lessons:

Che-Mystery    Current Events
Fun-damental Forces    Science of Magic Fantastic Fliers    Super Structures
Under Pressure    Wacky Water

System 4 offers in-depth explorations of some areas of science most popular and relatable to kids. They will learn how scientists have many kinds of specializations, from insects to weather prediction, and see how much of everyday life involves science.

System 4 Includes These Individual Lessons:

•Bugs!    •Detective Science
•Earthworks    •Kitchen Chemistry
•Mad Machines    •Movie Effects
•Science of Toys    •Walloping Weather

Academy of Future Space Explorers (AFSE) was developed with NASA exclusively for Mad Science. Kids learn about our amazing universe and the objects within it, as well as how much work goes into making human space travel a reality.

AFSE Includes These Individual Lessons:

•Planets and Moons    •Atmosphere and Beyond
•Space Phenomena    •Sun and Stars
•Rocket Science    •Space Travel

•Space Technology    •Living in Space
