Mad Science Birthday FAQ

Q: What do kids do at a Mad Science birthday party?
A: During the birthday show, a Mad Scientist will engage children with exciting demonstrations of physics and chemistry with the help of the birthday kid as the lab assistant. Kids will be asked to make hypothesis, figure out how experiments worked, and get a chance to see the results up close when possible. To top it off, each kid will mix up a cup of Mad Science slime to take home.

Some experiments that may be included are: fitting a water balloon into a flask, trying out vortex generators, watching acetone dissolve styrofoam, and touching superabsorbent polyacrylate beads. Please note that, except for slime-making, we do not guarantee any particular experiment. There may be constraints outside the Mad Scientist's control that would make some experiments impractical. Our birthday parties include enough material for our Mad Scientist to choose which experiments and demos they feel will work best at your party.

Q: How far in advance do I need to book my party?
A: You're welcome to book with us as soon as you know the date of your party. Our schedule can fill up quickly, so we recommend at least three weeks in advance to give the best chance of getting your preferred time and date. We'll try our best to accommodate last-minute party bookings.
Q: What do I need to do to make a reservation?
A: You can call us at (480) 222-2233 and we’ll be happy to schedule your party over the phone. We require a $30 deposit to book your party and accept Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. The deposit is deducted from the total price of your party but if you do need to cancel your party completely the deposit is not returned.
Q: Do I need to know the exact number of kids attending my party to book it?
A: No. All we need is an estimate of the number of children you expect to attend. We ask that you plan for the largest number of children expected. On the day of the party, you will be charged only for the number of kids that actually attend with the exception of parties with 33 or more children, where you will be charged the original amount.
Q: Do you have any themed parties?
A: All our themes revolve around science. If you have another party theme, we can notify the Mad Scientist, and he/she will do his/her best to incorporate your theme into the experiments and language that is used.
Q: When will the Mad Scientist arrive?
A: The Mad Scientist will arrive at least 15 minutes early to set up. He/she will be ready to start the show at the time you booked. It is best to start your party at least 30 minutes before your Mad Science show is scheduled to start, to ensure the Mad Scientist is able to start on time.
Q: What kind of space is needed?
A: The Mad Scientist will need to work off of a 6-ft. table that we ask you to provide. We ask that you have enough space for the Mad Scientist and for your guests to be comfortable as well. The kids can be seated on the floor or on chairs, several feet back from the table.
Q: How much space is needed for the rocket launch?
A: The Mad Scientist will need a medium to large sized back yard or open space to launch the rocket. If you are not sure whether you have sufficient space, you can always add the rocket launch and then the Mad Scientist will assess whether or not it is safe to launch the rocket on the day of the party. You will not be charged for the upgrade if the rocket cannot be launched safely. *Please note, City of Scottsdale does not allow us to launch rockets from any of their parks because of the Scottsdale Airpark nearby.
Q: Will I have to provide the Mad Scientist with anything?
A: We need use of a 6-ft. table to conduct our experiments on. We ask for a plastic folding table if possible. We prefer to not work off of your dining room table. We will need access to water for set-up and clean-up and access to electricity for the cotton candy upgrade. Please let us know if your party location cannot have either of these.
Q: Once I have scheduled my party, can I make changes to it later?
A: We'll try to work with any last-minute changes, but we recommend at least three business days notice for party changes.
Q: Is it okay to have other activities going on while the Mad Scientist is performing?
A: The Mad Scientist will begin at the scheduled start time and continue until our portion of the entertainment is finished. We will not be able to stop for any other activities (ex. food or cake). Please plan accordingly.
Q: What if there is bad weather on the day of my party?
A: If it rains on the day of your party, the Mad Scientist will call to see if there is an alternate indoor location to conduct the party.

If the temperature is over 90 degrees, our Mad Scientist can't do the main portion of the party outisde. They will still do rocket launch and cotton candy outside.
Q: Can I have the phone number of my Mad Scientist?
A: We do not provide the Mad Scientist’s personal contact information. If you would like the Mad Scientist to call you on the day of your party, we can make a note for him/her to do so.
Q: For what ages are your parties appropriate?
A: Our parties are appropriate for children between 5 to 12 years of age. Younger siblings generally watch, but do not actively participate in the party and should not make a take home project. We determine the number of attendees based on the number of children between the ages of 5 and 12.
Q: When do I pay?
A: We require a $30 deposit to book your party. In the days after the party, we will call you to check on how the party went, adjust the total based on number of kids if neccessary, and collect the remainder of the payment.
Q: What is your policy on tipping?

A. Our Mad Scientists always appreciate a tip for a great job. They can accept tips in cash or you can add it to your total when we call for payment after the party.
