Mad Science Camp FAQ

Q: What is a Mad Science Camp?

A: Mad Science is the world's leader in fun science for children. We are an international franchise organization whose mission is to get kids excited about science. There are over 165 Mad Science locations in 24 countries around the world. The Mad Science Group has been providing fun, hands-on science programs since 1985.

Our camps offer a daily combination of in-class discovery and exploration, games and physical activities. We use inquiry-based teaching techniques to guide campers to their own discoveries, and allow time for exploration based on campers' interests. Campers create a variety of take-home projects, so families can share in their discoveries and keep the learning going at home.

Q: At what age can my child attend a Mad Science camp?

A: Preschool camps are open to ages 3-5 and children must be fully potty-trained.

Elementary camps are generally open to children ages 5 to 11, with some exceptions. Some of our partner sites have independently chosen to limit the age ranges. We may also limit the age range of a popular camp to let us focus the activities on a narrower age range.

Robot Recruit, the robot-building camp, requires more focus and fine motor skills. Robot Recruit is open to children ages 8 to 12.

If you have a child who is slightly older than this age range but you believe they will still enjoy this camp, you're welcome to call and sign them up over the phone. Our Mad Scientists often give older camps the responsibility of being "lab assistants" and helping with setup, demonstrations, and assisting younger children with activities.

In addition to our age guidelines, we ask that all children be able to adhere to basic behavioral guidelines. Mad Science maintains a safe, friendly, and team-oriented camp atmosphere. If you think your child may need some assistance with their behavior, we welcome parents and guardians to spend the day at camp with their child. Please call or email us to set this up.

Q: How big are Mad Science camps?

A: Camps range in size depending on attendance but we strive not to exceed a ratio of 1 adult for every 15 children (1:12 for preschool.) Some of our locations provide their own staff to assist our Mad Scientist, and/or we may send multiple Mad Scientists to make sure all campers are safe and have the help they need to enjoy the activities.

Q: Is there food served at the camps?

A: Our camps include "snacktivities" designed to help reinforced the topics of the day; for example, children may construct molecule models out of pretzel sticks and marshmallows, or they may observe how popcorn kernels react to heat with an air popper. Food served at our camps include, but isn't limited to:

Fruit roll-ups
Dried fruit (raisins, apples, pineapples, mangos, etc.)
Goldfish crackers
Vanilla ice cream
Graham crackers
Peanut butter
Fresh fruit (strawberries, blueberries)

Please note that campers still need to bring their own food for the day! Because of time restrictions and potential dietary needs of other campers, we can never guarantee that we will provide food for campers during snack and lunch breaks.

Q: My child has a food allergy, can you accomodate this?

A: Mad Scientists take safety very seriously and we do everything we can do make sure no child is exposed to a food allergen. When we take camp registration directly, we ask for this information and include it on our attendance sheet. When one of our location takes registration, it is their responsibility to collect and provide this information. We do our best to follow up and are always willing to speak with parents directly regardless of registration source.

If you have any concerns about your child's allergies, please call us at (480) 222-2233 or email us at We can provide specific instructions to the Mad Scientist at your child's camp, including the elimination of all allergenic foods from the camp curriculum.

You may also speak with the Mad Scientist when you drop your child off, and ask to look at the ingredient labels of the snacks planned for that day. We can restrict them from being served to your child, or we can eliminate them from the camp curriculum.

Q: What does my child need to bring with them to camp?

A: The most important thing every child needs at camp is food! Campers are using a lot of energy exercising their minds and bodies, and nothing puts a stop to a fun day of learning like being hungry. We take breaks for food, and usually supplement with our own snacks but do not guarantee we will provide food.

Half-day camps include one snack break, so please pack one snack
Full-day camps include two snack breaks and one lunch break, so please pack two snacks and a bag lunch.

Some of our locations provide refrigerators for camper lunches but many don't; you can call us to check, but the safest bet is to pack a lunch that can be kept at room temperature. Our locations will have access to a drinking fountain, and outside activities are either adapted to indoor activities, or limited to very short periods of time in a shaded area. We will suggest sending your camper with a bottle of water and sun protection like a hat and sunscreen.

Q: How do I register for a Mad Science camp?

Camp registration depends on the location. For some of our locations, we handle registration directly through our website. For others, staff at that location handle registration instead.

When you visit our camp catalog and choose a camp, you will be able to directly register through our website, or you will be given instructions for how to register through another source.

If you have any questions or need assistance with registration, please call us at (480) 222-2233 or email us at

Q: How soon can I register for a camp?

A: Some of our camps fill up very quickly, and some of them don't. The safest thing to do is register as soon as you choose a camp to make sure your space is reserved.

Q: How do I pay for camp registration?

A: If you are registering through one of our partner locations, they will handle payment.

If you are registering through Mad Science directly, you can use a credit or debit card and will pay in full upon registration. You can also call us at (480) 222-2233 to pay by phone, or you can mail a check to us at:

Mad Science

Tempe, AZ

Please note that checks must be cleared at least 4 weeks prior to the camp start date.

Q: What is your refund policy?

A: If you would like to cancel a camp registration, please email us before the start date of the camp.

If you cancel your registration at least 4 weeks before the start date of the camp, you will be refunded the registration fee, minus a $50 deposit.

If you cancel your registration less than 4 weeks before the start date of the camp, you will be refunded 50% of the registration fee.

Once camp has started, there are no refunds available and there are no make-up days for missed camps.

If you would like to switch your registration from one Mad Science camp to another, you may do that at no cost. Call us at 480-222-2233 or email us at to switch registration.

Q: What if your camp locations or times don't work for me?

A: We're always looking to be able to bring fun science camps to more children in the Phoenix metro area!

If our camps don't work with your location or schedule, you can host your own Mad Science camp. We can adapt our camp curriculum and schedule for your homeschool class, Girl Scout or Boy Scout group, or even all the kids in your extended family. All you need to do is supply a minimum of 12 campers and a safe location to hold the camp, and we'll do the rest. Contact us to start developing your custom Mad Science camp today.

If you can't personally host a Mad Science camp but would like to see one closer to you, ask your local schools, community centers, libraries, or churches if they would like to host Mad Science. Contact us with any location suggestions and we will reach out to them.
